Production of environmental goods and services – time series updated 2016-2022

On the 6th of February 2025 Istat releases the time series on the supply of environmental goods and services (2016-2022) on data warehouse I.Stat and IstatData – ‘National accounts’ theme, ‘Environmental accounts’ sub-theme.  

The environmental goods and services sector account, also known as ecoindustries’ account, measures output, value added, exports and employment related to the supply of goods and services that fulfill (or whose use fulfills) the purpose of environmental protection from pollution and any other environmental degradation or preservation, maintenance and enhancement of natural resources.

The ecoindustries’ account is elaborated according to the European standards for monetary environmental accounts, which are consistent with national accounts concepts and principles (ESA 2010). Therefore the estimates can be directly compared with macroeconomic aggregates, namely GDP, output, exports, employment.

Estimates are related to all the sectors of the economy , including the market sector, non market operators (General Government and non-profit institutions) and own-account activities carried out by all the operators for re-use in the production process (i.e. recovery of materials to be re-used) or for own-consumption (i.e. solar energy produced and consumed by households).

The time series released incorporate innovations and improvements in methods and data sources and are also consistent with the general revision of national accounts carried out in September 2024. Previously released time series are available in the sections “National accounts – 2014 version” and “National accounts – 2019 version” of IstatData.
