The European Statistics Code of Practice celebrates its 20th anniversary

24 February marks the 20th anniversary of the European Statistics Code of Practice, adopted by the European Statistical System (ESS) on 24 February 2005.

This Code is essential to ensure the quality of European statistics, following a common framework between Eurostat and the EU/EFTA national statistical authorities, which are part of the ESS.

Results, processes and the institutional environment all contribute to the quality of official statistics. The Code sets standards for the development, production and dissemination of European statistics and consists of 16 principles and 84 indicators. It aims to ensure relevant, timely and accurate statistics, respecting principles of independence, impartiality and objectivity.

The ultimate goal is to ensure high quality European statistics, thereby earning users’ trust.

Confidence in European statistics and their use can be a safeguard for society against misinformation.
