Environmental physical accounts – Air emissions accounts (AEA)
On January 23, 2025, Istat releases on its data warehouse (theme ‘National accounts’, sub-theme ‘Environmental accounts/’NAMEA air emissions’) the time series 2008-2022 on Air emissions accounts (AEA) and the 2023 provisional data on greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions.
In 2024 edition, the time series of the air emissions accounts was revised due to innovations and improvements in methods and data sources; data are also consistent with the general revision of national accounts carried out in September 2024, in coordination with other European countries, ten years after the adoption of the new European System of Accounts (ESA 2010). To date the time series is available from 2008 onwards. Previously released time series are available in the sections “National accounts – 2014 version” and “National accounts – 2019 version” of this same site.
The 2008-2022 time series concern air emissionsof24 pollutantsby economic activities, classified in 64 industries and households(3consumption functions). The provisional 2023 data are released with a detail of 38 industries.
Air emissions accounts are compiled in accordance with EU Regulation 691/2011, as amended by EU Delegated Regulation 2022/125, and their consistency with national accounts data makes them suitable for integrated environmental-economic analyses.
Air emissions accounts are calculated starting from the national emission inventory annually produced by Istituto Superiore per la Ricerca e la Protezione Ambientale (Ispra).
Additional information disseminated by Istat are:
- a bridge table devoted to show the link between AEA air emissions totals and the totals calculated by Ispra and used for Italian Communications within the framework of international conventions: United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the UNECE Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP);
- emission intensity of production, value added and employment.
In 2023, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the Italian economy decrease by 5.3% compared to the previous year and amount below 400 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
The reductions in industries of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (-22,2%), manufacturing industries (-3,8%) and residential heating (-9,3%) contribute most to this trend. These reductions are held back by rising emissions from other production activities, in particular transport (+9.1%).
